The Pink Elephant Lady
Anything with a Plug Event and Membership Drive Coming June 5th!
We're so excited to announce our Anything with a Plug Event and Membership Drive coming up on Saturday, June 5th from 10 AM to 6 PM! The event will be held at our retail store at 9413 John R in Detroit's North End neighborhood. Refreshments and snacks, as well as lots of information about our club memberships will be provided!
Can't make it on Saturday? Schedule an appointment to drop off, all week from Monday, May 31st through Friday, June 4th.
WHAT'S GOING ON?
As the name suggests, anything with a plug is accepted (except for large appliances like stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. and air conditioners). Items do NOT have to be working! As a matter of fact, broken is better, as reuse is higher up on the waste hierarchy than recycle. Old telephones, curling irons, outdated video game consoles, VCRs, coffee pots, broken or old televisions and monitors (even the big, thick, heavy ones with CRTs), cords, alarm clocks - anything with a plug!
NOTE: If your municipality does not accept e-waste like phones, laptops, and tablets, you may bring those too. CHECK WITH YOUR CITY FIRST!
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
This event is exclusively for our Recycling Club, Compost Club, and Zero Waste Champion Club Members. Not a member yet? Bring your items and sign up on-site! You are able to sign up for a one-time drop off if you prefer, or you can sign up for a monthly or annual subscription.
WHAT IS A MEMBERSHIP? WHY SHOULD I SIGN UP?
We can help your household get as close to zero waste as possible by accepting items that cannot go in your curbside bin, as well as food scraps, compostable utensils and takeout food packaging, and much, much more.
NO ITEM LISTED AS SOMETHING WE ACCEPT WILL EVER BE LANDFILLED OR BURNED AFTER DROP OFF. EVER.
Recycling Club is $5 a month and includes unlimited drop off all month long at any of our four drop off locations. Compost Club is $10 a month and includes up to 6 gallons of compostable materials drop off every week. There are other benefits too, like a new supply of compost bags every quarter, exclusive access to our members-only Recycling Club Hotline, and more. Learn more, download a list of what we accept, and sign up for membership today by visiting our website at https://www.pinkelephantproducts.com/wecanhelpyourecycle

WHY ISN'T THE CLUB MEMBERSHIP FREE? WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR RECYCLING AND COMPOSTING?
Just like getting your hair cut, going out to dinner, or going to the car wash, recycling and composting are a service, performed by a network of materials collectors, haulers, and processors (like industrial composting facilities) that have to pay their employees, pay for insurance, transport vehicles, facility maintenance, and more. This network is part the Green Economy, which creates Green Collar Jobs!
Of course, you could compost at home or, with due diligence, find other outlets beside our company for recycling your materials. Kind of like making your own dinner and your own coffee at home, cutting your own hair, or washing your car at home. When you cannot do these things for whatever reason or do not want to, that's where the service sector comes in. We provide recycling and composting service!
There's a misconception that there's big bucks to be had in selling what is collected. We earn NO PROFIT on this entire program. As a matter of fact, any proceeds earned from from our collection of materials goes to Green Living Science, a nonprofit organization that provides recycling education to Detroit schools and businesses.
Recycling is never 'free'. It may seem 'free' because don't pay every time you drop off, but that's because the recycling and waste removal your city provides is funded by taxpayer dollars, which pay the massive waste hauling and recycling companies that provide this service to your city. We are not a municipality, and we collect no taxes to fund the costs of the service we provide. That's where the monthly fee comes in! We keep this fee as small as possible to encourage waste reduction - because we know it seems 'free' to just throw everything away.
Remember, there really is no 'away'!
